Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a series of books written by Rick Riordan that follow the adventures of a young demigod on his quest to save the world and avoid a disastrous prophecy. Aiding him on his quest is a satyr and one of Athena’s half-mortal daughters. These books have a Harry Potter meets Chronicles of Narnia feeling that becomes a fresh and unique take on the young hero story by drawing on Greek mythology.
Casting for this movie includes familiar names like Pierce Brosnon, Rosario Dawson, Uma Thurman and Kevin McKidd with some up and coming youngsters as well. Given the direction of Chris Columbus, this movie has the potential to live up to the popularity of the Harry Potter films. While there have been many doubts about the casting decisions, one need only think back to initial reactions to Harry Potter announcements in order to trust Columbus’s decisions. If you’re worried about Logan Lerman’s age, remember that Tom Welling is significantly older than his Clark Kent character, and Alex P Keaton was played by a significantly older Michael J. Fox. Certainly Lerman doesn’t look eleven, but he does look very Percy Jackson.
