Uma is featured in next months issue of Candids magazine. Here is a preview of her article in the magazine:

Stunning, statuesque and quintessentially A-list, most people wouldn’t think of Uma Thurman as an independent mother-of-two trying to balance family life with her career and creative ambitions. She tells Veronica Parker about the conflicts and contradictions of being a working mum

MayEven though Uma Thurman describes herself as, “An average gal,” most of us see her as distinctly un-average. A critically acclaimed actress who has wielded her talent and icy good looks to great effect, Boston-born Uma Karuna Thurman has a glut of credits behind her. She’s been the centre
of lustful intrigue in Dangerous Liaisons, the goddess Venus in The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen, a gangster’s moll in Pulp Fiction and a feisty fighter in Kill Bill. Her personal life has been equally as eventful. Freshly single, having recently split from her French financier fiancé, Arpad Busson, she has two children, Maya, 11, and Levon, 8, by second husband Ethan Hawke, having previously been briefly married to British actor Gary Oldman. But out of all this, Uma credits being a mother as the most challenging and rewarding part of her life.

“I love and adore being a mother. It’s the greatest gift I’ve ever been given. Having children flips the game from being about you to about what you can create in a home and what your responsibilities are. I’ve thought about quitting acting, but I love what I do so much – it’s the big conundrum of my life. So I’m fighting to keep my foot in the business, be creative and stimulated, and still take care of my children.”

When Uma Thurman arrives at 6:47pm for the Motherhood special screening presented by Gotham Magazine and Coccinelle Wednesday at NYC’s SVA Theater, flashbulbs pop in awe of the towering screen siren.

With a line-free forehead and hair just ever so escaping her headband, the grounded actress, 39, who is mom to Maya, 11, and Levon, 7 — whose dad is ex-hubby Ethan Hawke — stops by to chat about the ups and downs of motherhood and whether she’d like more kids.

What’s the most challenging and rewarding thing about motherhood?

“The incredible opportunity to love and expand your heart, and to learn, and to discover yourself in many different ways,” Uma, wearing black pants, tells me with a laugh.

As a Hollywood actress, how does she relate to her character?

“We are not in Hollywood, we are in New York,” she cautions with a long pause.

Her mega-huge diamond engagement ring from fiancé Arpad Busson sparkles.

“In millions of ways,” she says. “Wait … how do I relate to it … I’ve had a long day. Well, her circumstances are different, but her concerns are the same as mine. Trying to be true to yourself as an individual and as a woman and be a loving mother and grow and find yourself – that’s the kind of thing we all deal with. I thought that was really universal.”

Any more kids in her future? She laughs nervously, and is whisked into the theater hugging friends and bobbing her head back and forth in conversation.

What is Uma like as a mom?

Writer/director Katherine Dieckmann tells me, “She is a wonderful, dedicated and devoted mom. We live actually not faraway from her in the Village, so I would see her sometimes at the playgrounds since we have children about the same age. I’ve always observed her to be an extraordinarily loving and committed and present mother.”

Really? We could find her at the playground?

“She takes her kids to the playground, of course,” she says. “She tries to keep as normal of a life as one can keep in this world being Uma Thurman.”

Post-screening, Uma, co-star Anthony Edwards and Katherine head to the afterparty at The Gates. The mom of two sneaks cigarettes by the fireplace until well after midnight. Uh-oh! Billy’s Bakery provides cupcakes before Uma heads home to the fam.

Motherhood is in theaters October 23.

Many moms find themselves in need of a break, but Uma Thurman says that several years ago she found herself contemplating one — on doctor’s orders! “He said, ‘I’m going to write you a prescription,’ and I went OK, what’s he giving me a prescription for?,” she recalls in a new interview with The Times. “And he wrote down on the pad: ‘‘Hotel: one night a week.’” She never followed through, in part because the 39-year-old actress says she found the idea of curling up alone in a hotel room with her books “unthinkable.”

Uma has since reconsidered her stance, however! “When my son turned 7, I sort of stood up straight and I suddenly realized I had been like this [makes expansive gesture of exhaustion], in one way or the other, for the past 10 years,” she notes.

“My big wish now is to make a little time for myself. I think many women, working women, get this. I mean how do you justify that hour and a half to yourself? When you have this to do and that to do and you want to be there…So I really want to do that. I really think it’s necessary.”

Uma feels that motherhood is about “the chaos and the confusion, and also the loss of yourself.” Not that the latter is a bad thing; “There is a good part to losing yourself,” she notes. “Any mother that doesn’t give herself up isn’t a good mother.” At the same time, however, Uma cautions that “you can get to a point where you can’t reach the identity that helped you be stable in the first place — and that is quite a frightening feeling.”

“I must have gone through years of it. Just years of confusion. Guilty when you’re here and guilty when you’re there, of being torn in half. Your happiness depends on where you measure in your sense of duty: what’s your shame level today? What have you forgotten, what did you do wrong, what could you do better?”

Here’s a short excerpt of Uma’s interview from Harpers Bazaar UK:

Uma Thurman misses being a “passenger” on close friend’s Natasha Richardson’s driven life.

“She (Natasha) would have a plan on arrival anywhere and would be carving the best out of life and every situation and every person,” Thurman tells the July issue of Harper’s Bazaar U.K., on sale today. “She wasn’t as much a passenger as I am, which made us great companions in life … because every driver needs a passenger … and every passenger needs a driver. So it’s a big loss in my life.”

Richardson’s death from a freak skiing accident earlier this year has inspired Thurman to make sure she lives her life to its fullest. The 39-year-old actress, who was married to and shares two children with actor Ethan Hawke, is currently readying for a London wedding to British tycoon/philanthropist Arki Busson.

“Isn’t life amazing? Isn’t life full of surprises? When it comes to things like marriage, you just never know,” Thurman says. “I find that growing up has been all about realizing that life gets more serious, and that it’s also really important to increase your sense of humor.”

Apparently, for Thurman, it’s also really important to increase the number of houses you own in posh vacation destinations.

“I would buy a country house in virtually every country in the world if I could,” she said (and with Busson’s billions, she probably could!). “I also want a country house in Italy, France, Switzerland; I have aspirations in Mexico …. virtually all coastal regions. I just have this constant curiosity to open a clam in every country and eat the squirming things from every shore.”

The Sunday Times interviewed Uma for their July 6, 2008, issue and I have added the article to our press archive. It’s a sweet article about love and life in general and her new engagment

“Oh, come on. I look my age, and I don’t mind. Everyone looks their age – some just look a little bit more fantasy. Being in my late thirties is fine with me. Maybe when 40 hits, the penny will drop and you just hate life. But so far, so good.”

“I didn’t feel awkward, I was awkward. It’s such a clich?? ??, but it’s a truism that tall, gangly women who end up all right later in life are always ugly children. I was funny-looking. I mean, look at my hands. Imagine having these hands at 12! By the time I was 13, I was easily 5ft 10in. Can you imagine? That’s a mess.”

“Oh, yes. People basically said, ‘Sayonara.’ Obviously, I was in my prime, at the top, and that shut it all down. But I wanted to shut it down. I wanted to have a family more than I wanted another 10 jobs.”

“You learn that the first failure isn’t the end. I thought I’d seen the end of my career 10 times over. I’ve experienced them as death blows. What’s nice – after numerous efforts, successes, failures, losses, professional and personal – is to actually accept you’re not going to ace your life. You suffer, then you get on with it. You may spend three months in bed, but, eventually, you’re going to have to get up.”

An article conserning Life Before Their Eyes and other important issues.

Actress Uma Thurman wants all parents of American teens to watch her new film ??? ?? The Life Before Their Eyes??? ??? so that other school shooting tragedies can be avoided. Schools across the country have been on high alert for shootings after the horrific tragedy in 1999 at Columbine High School in which 12 students and one teacher were killed, contactmusic.com reports.

Thurman believes parents should be more involved in their children??? ?? ?s lives to know what they are thinking and feeling so that clues can be picked up and further tragedies averted.

She plays a mother dealing with the school massacre that claims her best friend in ??? ?? The Life Before Their Eyes??? ??? and believes it will give parents a lot to think about.

She said: ??? ?? I feel really certain that probably, in a few hundred cases, a parent is going to watch this movie with their 12, 14, 17-year-old, and, in the conversation they have afterwards, they??? ?? ?re going to learn something about their kid that they never knew.

??? ?? It??? ?? ?s going to enlighten and benefit them. The conversation is going to blow their mind about what that kid has been holding onto like being bullied or how maybe they went through an abortion or how maybe they had a tough boyfriend who treated them disrespectfully.??? ???

She added: ??? ?? If it??? ?? ?s your son, it might be how they had a girl they dated and an abortion happened to them. Who knows? The movie deals with some real things that cause real feelings and that??? ?? ?s a pleasure to have that out there whether it be on the screen or the video box. At some time I??? ?? ?d like to show my kids the film.??? ???

Uma Thurman, who missed her high school prom, is still upset that she missed the traditional coming-of-age event.

The ‘Pulp Fiction‘ actress wasn??? ?? ?t able to attend the event because she had to work.

“I never went to my prom. It was sad. I didn’t go because I had started working when I was 16,” she told US TV show Extra in an interview to promote her film ‘The Life Before Her Eyes‘.

The ‘Kill Bill‘ star, who turns 38 next week, also revealed that the new movie left her “haunted”. She plays a woman who must endure disturbing flashbacks after witnessing her best friend killed in a shooting at their high school.

“It was a wonderful film to make. It’s haunting and it’s moving. It is a very deep piece of material. It is such a real capturing of teen experiences,” she said of the film in which she appears opposite Evan Rachel Wood.

“Hopefully it will help parents to sit down and have these difficult conversations with their children. The conversations could help open people up and provoke. It could be incredibly helpful.”
