Here is the first still from Uma’s Ceremony. The movie will be screened on this years Toronto International Film Festival.

Here is an description of the movie from the TIFF website.

A perpetual adolescent stumbling through his twenties with inflated self-confidence, Sam (Michael Angarano) clings to the naive notions of love and romance that he immortalizes in a series of unpublished children’s books. With his sensitive, sycophantic best friend Marshall (Reece Thompson) in tow, he heads to the Hamptons to make a last-ditch effort to woo the object of his infatuation.

Thirty-something publisher Zoe (Uma Thurman) is about to marry Whit (Lee Pace), a self-important documentary filmmaker who’s an outrageous cross between Jacques Costeau and “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin. Sam refuses to accept that anyone else could be the love of Zoe’s life and, dressed to the nines in a crumpled burgundy suit, crashes Zoe and Whit’s wedding reception, determined to prove his point.

Like its lead character, Ceremony is dressed for laughs, clothed in all the finery common to romantic comedies: geeky best friends crashing a party in search of revelatory adventure; an egotistical buffoon as the lead character’s romantic competition; a younger sibling (Paper Heart’s Jake M. Johnson – heartfelt and hilarious in every scene) who’s satisfied being a loser since the role of overachiever has already been taken; and of course, a lovelorn lad who clings to his romantic delusions until they blow up in his face.

Yet the heart of the film is deep, complex and ultimately more serious than its initial trappings may suggest. Showing startling maturity for a first-time writer-director, Max Winkler is less concerned with easy laughs and poppy punchlines than with peeling back the layers of his characters’ insecurities, revealing the damaged heart beating beneath the surface and the wounded ego that struggles to gain attention.

Is Sam searching for true love or for unconditional acceptance from a mother figure? When we engage in the ceremonies of courtship, are we following our hearts or being led astray by our desires? Drawing seamlessly upon these themes while eliciting pitch-perfect performances from a terrific cast, Winkler announces himself as a talented director capable of plumbing the depths of human relationships.

Uma Thurman and Almorah Services, which acquired Brit shingle HandMade, have settled the pending litigation over pic “Eloise in Paris,” and the star will continue to go ahead with the project.

Thurman, who HandMade cast three years ago to play the nanny in a movie version of the ’50s children’s tome “Eloise in Paris,” hired showbiz lawyer Bert Fields in January and instructed him to sue HandMade for 6 million ($9.6 million) as the pic had not lensed and the thesp had missed out on other films she could have made during the period.

The settlement means Thurman will continue to be involved with the project in some capacity, Almorah owner David Francis said Friday.

“We aim to build a long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationship with Uma and are delighted to resolve this matter in a very amicable manner and at a very early stage,” he said.

Thurman added, “I am delighted to begin a fresh relationship with HandMade Films and look forward to helping to bring ‘Eloise’ to the big screen.”

It’s unclear whether Australian tyke Jordana Beatty, who was cast to play 6-year-old Eloise, is still attached.

Now age 12, she has snagged the title role in helmer John Schultz’s family pic “Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer” for Smokewood Entertainment (Daily Variety, July 21).

Meanwhile, HandMade has been restructured since Almorah paid $3.5 million for it, a tenth of its value, in April.

Francis called it a “significant challenge” involving a change of management, a review of operations, “and a focus on generating stable revenue for the company, whilst respecting the integrity and history of its great assets,” which include “Monty Python’s Life of Brian” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” among other pics.

Francis is CEO of Horizon Group, one of HandMade’s shareholders. He set up Almorah specifically for the HandMade acquisition, buying the 40% stake in the shingle owned by former co-CEO Patrick Meehan’s family trust Cartier Investments.

Almorah now holds a 100% stake in the company.

HandMade, founded by former Beatle George Harrison in the 1970s, has been having longterm financial difficulties. Its shares were suspended in January for the third time in three years and HandMade is now delisted from the London Stock Exchange.

ANCIENT history and mythology is one of Hollywood’s current trends, with entries including Clash of the Titans and its just-announced sequel, next year’s Immortals and the recent children’s book adaptation Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

Released in UK cinemas in February, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is heading to Blu-ray and DVD on July 5, it’s been announced by 20th Century Fox.

Here is the official description and disc details.

Epic fantasy-adventure Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief will bring Greek mythology to life this summer when it’s released on DVD and Blu-ray on July 5.

The film follows teenager Percy Jackson, as an ordinary 21st century school day turns into a race against time, filled with warring Greek gods and creatures straight from the pages of his mythology textbooks.

Released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and directed by legendary fantasy director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, The Goonies) Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief stars teen heartthrob Logan Lehrman (3:10 to Yuma) as Percy, a high school student whose life is turned upside-down when he discovers he’s the son of the Greek god Poseidon (Kevin McKidd; Trainspotting, Grays Anatomy).

With his mother missing and facing accusations of stealing Zeus’ (Sean Bean: Sharpe, Lord of the Rings) lightning bolt, Percy must embark on a cross-country quest to find the real lightning thief and avert a mythological war.

Joined on his adventure by fellow demi-god and daughter of Athena, Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario; Law and Order, All my Children) and a satyr named Grover (Brandon T. Jackson; Fast and Furious, The Day the Earth Stood Still), Percy’s journey brings him face-to-face with furies, centaurs, minotaurs and all-manner of other mythical creatures.

Tasked with finding the bolt before the summer solstice, Percy must first battle with Medusa (Uma Thurman: My Super Ex-girlfriend, Batman and Robin), outsmart the seductive Lotus Eaters and escape Hades (Steve Coogan: Night at the Museum 2, Tropic Thunder).

But will Percy be able find Zeus’s bolt, return it to Olympus in time and avert a godly war?

Based on the best-selling books by Rick Riordan, this fast-paced adventure features an all-star cast that includes; Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia, James Bond), Rosario Dawson (Alexander, Sin City) and Jake Abel (The Lovely Bones), and will be available as a Blu-ray Triple Play including a hi-def Blu-ray disc for home viewing, a DVD for the kids and a Digital Copy disc for watching on the go; a complete collection for the ultimate family viewing experience.

Running time: 105 minutes
Certificate: PG
