			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<br/><p>Uma Thurman is joining fashion forces with Saks Fifth Avenue and Donna Karan to help in the battle against breast cancer. The actress was named Friday as the ambassador for Saks’ Annual Key to the Cure shopping event, which in partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, has raised more than $33 million for cancer research in the 12 years since its inception. “Everyone I know has been affected by breast cancer one way or the other,” says Thurman in a release. “It is vital that we work toward a cure as well as develop more accurate and advance testing.” Thurman will star in print ads as well as a national public service announcement sporting a limited-edition and very chic T-shirt designed by Donna Karan. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the $35-shirt will be donated to local partner charities. “For me, it’s not just about dressing women; it’s about addressing the issues that are so important to all of us,” says Karan in a release. The T-shirts will be available at all Saks Fifth Avenue stores and on Saks.com beginning October 1. Sak’s annual charity shopping weekend will take place from Oct. 21 – 24. <p>The company asked for a ruling against the actress, who it says is demanding $1 million for unauthorized use of her name and face on Canadian billboards and Asian Web sites after her contract expired.</p>
<p>Thurman&#8217;s lawyer, Bertram Fields, said he was surprised by Lancome&#8217;s lawsuit.</p>
<p>&#8221;I thought we were negotiating in good faith,&#8221; Fields said Thursday. &#8221;I guess the French decided to strike a pre-emptive blow.&#8221;<br />

Lancome and Thurman signed a two-year contract in April 2000 with an option to extend the agreement for another two years.</p>
<p>Under the terms, Lancome agreed to pay Thurman $5.8 million for the first two years and $3.1 million for each additional year, if the company exercised its option.</p>
<p>Lancome claims the contract relieves the company of responsibility if third parties use her name and face after the contract lapses.</p>
<p>Lancome&#8217;s lawyer, Peter D. Raymond, said his client &#8221;can&#8217;t control everybody out in the world.&#8221;</p>
<p>The papers were filed Wednesday in Manhattan&#8217;s state Supreme Court. Earlier this week, 37-year-old Jack Jordan was convicted of stalking and harassing Thurman in the court&#8217;s criminal part.</p>
<p>&#8221;I&#8217;m delighted that the case will go before a jury,&#8221; Thurman&#8217;s lawyer said. &#8221;They got an enormous benefit throughout the world after the contract was over, and $1 million doesn&#8217;t begin to do it.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<p>The &#8220;Kill Bill&#8221; star said in her lawsuit that Lancome Parfums et Beaute &#038; Cie boosted its worldwide sales and enhanced its &#8220;prestige, stature and bargaining power&#8221; by helping retailers and others use her name and likeness in advertising and promotions after her contract expired.</p>
<p>The suit seeks $15 million in damages.<br />

Lancome tried Wednesday to shield itself from legal action by the 38-year-old actress. Saying she had threatened litigation, the company asked a state judge to rule against her claim that her name and face were used on Canadian billboards and Asian Web sites later than the contract allowed.</p>
<p>Thurman&#8217;s lawyer, Bertram Fields, has called Lancome&#8217;s state lawsuit &#8220;a pre-emptive blow.&#8221;</p>
<p>The dispute stems from a two-year contract Thurman and the company signed in April 2000, with an option to extend the agreement for another two years.</p>
<p>The contract said Thurman would be paid $5.8 million for the first two years and $3.1 million for each additional year, if the company exercised its option.</p>
<p>Lancome claimed the contract specifies that the company was not responsible if third parties used her name and face after the agreement lapsed.</p>

<p>Other celebrities who have endorsed products for Lancome include model Carol Alt and actresses Isabella Rossellini, Juliette Binoche, Mena Suvari and Drew Barrymore. </p>

<p>The struggling cable operator, which last week announced it had lost almost 47,000 customers in the first three months of 2007, is replacing the &#8217;25m launch campaign featuring Thurman with four new TV ads starring comedienne Wax (MW last week).</p>
<p>But industry sources have criticised the Thurman campaign for looking &#8216;old and tired&#8217; and the decision to turn to Wax, who has previously appeared in ads for Vauxhall, the BBC and Tesco, has raised eyebrows.</p>
<p>One source says: &#8216;Virgin has failed to differentiate itself from the competition and the Ruby Wax campaign looks a little bit desperate.&#8217;</p>
<p>However, Kydd claims the Thurman activity has helped Virgin achieve an 80% awareness &#8216; three times higher than that of NTL.&#8217; This has been the quickest awareness building campaign I can think of by any brand,&#8217; he adds. &#8216;It has not been a failure,  it is one of the most successful ever.&#8217;</p>
<p>The Wax ads will focus on Virgin?  ? ? !&#8221; s telephony business, which lost a net 63,400 subscribers in the first quarter of this year and was the main reason for the overall decline in group customers.</p>
<p>Kydd says: ?  ? ? S Ruby Wax is a particularly good fit for the new campaign because she is talkative and in your face. She is Virgin-like, has attitude and a high likeability factor.?  ? ? ?</p>
<p>Ads that have already been shot featuring Thurman may still be used but Kydd admits Virgin will then move on to keep the brand ?  ? ? S fresh?  ? ? ?.</p>
